Driving side: left-hand traffic

In Cyprus you drive on the left. Had your licence for less than 3 years? The alcohol limit is 0.2 ‰. You must carry two warning triangles, and on the motorway you can do 100 km/h.

Key points for young drivers:

  • Left-hand traffic, motorway max. 100 km/h (min. 65 km/h).
  • Alcohol: 0.2 ‰ if you’ve had your licence for less than 3 years – and always on a motorcycle.
  • Two warning triangles in the car.
  • You can rent a car from the age of 21.
  • No vignettes and no toll roads.

Seat belts and child seats

Seat belts are compulsory in the front and back. Children travel in EU-approved child seats suited to their weight, age and height.

Traffic lights

Official sources give no special traffic light rules. Just remember that with left-hand traffic, traffic lights and turning lanes are “mirrored”.

Helmet not compulsory

  • bicycle
  • tricycles and quadricycles (light and heavy)

Helmet compulsory

  • motorcycle (including with a sidecar) – rider and passenger
  • moped – rider and passenger

Compulsory equipment in the car

  • two red warning triangles with stands

Compulsory equipment on a bike

No specific requirements in the sources.

Winter tyres and snow chains

Winter tyres are not compulsory. In winter it can snow in the Troodos Mountains – check conditions before you set off.

Phone, drugs and other bans

  • Phone only with a hands-free kit – holding it in your hand is banned.
  • Driving under the influence of drugs or medicines is banned (e.g. THC, methamphetamine, MDMA); the police can carry out saliva and blood tests.
  • The minimum speed on motorways is 65 km/h.

Vignettes, tolls and low-emission zones

Cyprus has no vignettes and no toll roads.

Documents and insurance

  • Your EU/EEA driving licence is valid (Cyprus is in the EU).
  • The car must have valid third-party motor insurance – a policy from an EU country is enough, no Green Card needed.
  • You can rent a car if you are at least 21 years old (Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs).

Note: the northern part of the island is not controlled by the government of the Republic of Cyprus, and different insurance rules apply there – before you go, check the rules with your rental company and at odyseusz.gov.pl (in Polish).

What to watch out for

  • Left-hand traffic. Most tourists drive a rental car with the steering wheel on the right – give yourself a moment to get used to it.
  • Public transport is poorly developed (no railways) – so a car is essential.
  • Cars and things left inside them do get stolen – don’t leave anything in sight.
  • Alcohol: if you’ve had your licence for less than 3 years or you’re riding a motorcycle, the limit is 0.2 ‰.

Remember: Abroad, the rules of the country you are driving in apply – including lower alcohol limits for novice drivers. Road signs take precedence over the values in the table. Vignettes, toll booths and toll-free motorways: motorway tolls and vignettes in Europe.
