Winter tyres and snow chains

In winter conditions – black ice, packed snow, slush, ice or frost – you must have winter tyres marked M+S (M.S., M&S) or with the snowflake symbol (3PMSF). The requirement has no calendar dates – what counts is the weather. Without such tyres in winter you risk a fine and having your car immobilised.

Phone, drugs and other bans

Phone only through a hands-free kit.

Drugs: driving after THC, amphetamine, methamphetamine, MDMA, cocaine and morphine is banned – in practice zero tolerance.

You don’t drive in closed lanes (e.g. at roadworks), on the hard shoulder or in bus or cycle lanes.

Vignettes, tolls and low-emission zones

Motorways are free – there are no vignettes or toll booths for cars (the Eurovignette only applies to lorries).

Documents and insurance

A driving licence issued in the EU/EEA is recognised in Luxembourg, so your EU licence is enough. Take your vehicle registration certificate and proof of third-party motor insurance – a Green Card is not required.

What to watch out for

Fines for speeding and drink-driving are very strict.
Are you a novice driver? Your limit is 0.2 ‰ – in practice, don’t drink anything.
On the motorway you slow down to 110 km/h in the rain.
In winter the weather counts, not the date – in snow and ice your car can be immobilised without winter tyres.
