Seat belts and child seats
Seat belts and child seats are mandatory. Only a medical certificate can exempt you from wearing a seat belt.
Traffic lights
Red light together with a sign allowing a right turn: you may turn right if you don’t endanger anyone. Otherwise the same rules as in most EU countries.
Helmet not compulsory
Adult cyclists don’t have to wear a helmet.
Helmet compulsory
- motorcycles (including with a sidecar) and mopeds,
- three- and four-wheelers – unless they have seat belts or an enclosed cab,
- bicycles and light electric vehicles (e.g. e-scooters) – until the age of 18.

Winter tyres and snow chains
Winter tyres are mandatory from 15 November to 15 March – and outside this period whenever there are winter conditions (snow, ice).
Phone, drugs and other bans
Phone only with a hands-free kit. You also mustn’t play music so loud that you can’t hear the traffic, or do anything that reduces your attention and control of the car.
Drugs: THC, methamphetamine, MDMA and all substances on the official list are banned. Hard shoulder on the motorway – emergencies only; dedicated lanes – public transport only.
Vignettes, tolls and low-emission zones
On all motorways and expressways you need an e-vignette (cars up to 3.5 t and motorcycles). Buy it on the official website evinjeta.dars.si – the vignette is linked to your registration number, so enter it without mistakes.
The Karawanks Tunnel on the border with Austria has a separate toll – the vignette doesn’t cover it.
Documents and insurance
- A driving licence from an EU/EEA country is valid throughout the EU. Bring the plastic card.
- Vehicle registration certificate and proof of your third-party motor insurance – within the EU you don’t need a Green Card.
What to watch out for
- Under 21 or had your licence for less than 2 years? In Slovenia you are a “novice driver” – zero alcohol for you.
- Buy the e-vignette before you get on a motorway or expressway – driving without one is illegal.
- From 15 November to 15 March don’t set off without winter tyres.
- Lights (daytime running lights or dipped headlights) always on – even on a sunny day.
